Defining and Performing Analytical Techniques for Assessing Fisetin Bioavailability and Absorption Efficiency in Enhanced Formulations

Desired outcome

We aim to improve the body's ability to absorb fisetin, a flavonoid known for its anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties. This will involve comparing how well the body absorbs fisetin from different formulations containing additional ingredients to enhance its absorption. The study aims to gain insights into analytical techniques for assessing fisetin bioavailability and absorption efficiency to identify the most effective formulations.

Initial Problem Description

Despite its potential health benefits, Fisetin is hindered by poor oral bioavailability, thereby limiting its therapeutic efficacy. Various formulation strategies and absorption-enhancing compounds have been implemented to enhance fisetin's absorption within the body. The challenge is to define multiple formulation strategies and absorption-enhancing compounds that can enhance the absorption of fisetin within the body. The development of distinct fisetin formulations and subsequent evaluation of their respective efficacy in absorption rates is done through a series of comprehensive tests. During the challenge, teams will define optimal analytical techniques for assessing fisetin bioavailability and conduct absorption efficiency assessments using various analytical techniques to determine the most bioavailable formulation.

Context

In nutraceutical development, bioavailability is a key factor in determining the effectiveness of compounds such as fisetin. Despite extensive research on its health benefits, its low absorption has been a significant barrier to its widespread use. Recent advances in formulation technology, including nanoemulsions, liposomal encapsulation, and cyclodextrin complexation, offer promising methods to enhance the delivery of fisetin. We aim to explore these approaches, focusing on how different supporting ingredients influence absorption and how these formulations can be developed for real-world applications.

Connection to cross-cutting areas

The challenge intersects with several key cross-cutting areas:
• Industry 4.0 and Digitalization: A quantified approach to fisetin absorption accelerates product development by using digital modeling to predict bioavailability. This allows for optimizing production processes and ensuring that fisetin supplements are tailored for maximum efficacy.
• Circularity and General Sustainability: The project will prioritize using sustainable and bio-compatible ingredients in the formulations. Focusing on natural ingredients for absorption enhancement aligns with the broader sustainability goals in product development.
• Health and Well-being: Fisetin is associated with longevity and wellness. This project has the potential to unlock its therapeutic benefits by making it more bioavailable, contributing to the well-being sector.

Input

Teams will be provided with:
- Preliminary research data on fisetin’s absorption challenges.
- Access to products with distinct formulation strategies, each designed to enhance absorption using different supporting ingredients.
- Guidance on the analytical methods needed to assess fisetin concentrations in biological samples.
- Access to academic papers and research on related bioavailability studies to guide their investigation.

Expectations

We expect to obtain valuable information about the most effective analytical techniques and their implementation for evaluating fisetin's bioavailability and absorption efficiency. Furthermore, the selected analytical technique will be used to determine fisetin’s absorption efficiency in designed formulations.

Desired Team Profile

The ideal team for this project would include students with diverse backgrounds in:
Pharmacology/Nutrition/Biochemistry: To understand fisetin’s biochemical properties and its role in human health.
Chemical Engineering: To understand the technologies used to enhance its absorption.
Analytical Chemistry: To carry out the absorption tests using available analytical methods.
The teams are expected to independently design and execute the study, including selecting appropriate testing methods, collecting data, and providing the results to determine which formulation performs best.

Additional Information

Students will be expected to collaborate closely with each other across borders, utilizing digital communication tools to share data and findings. They will be encouraged to think creatively about optimal analytical techniques and how novel formulations with absorption-enhancing ingredients can solve bioavailability, making fisetin a more viable nutraceutical for public use.
