Project 1: Product Utilizing Post-Production Regrind

Desired outcome

Design a functional and aesthetically appealing product made from Kaplast’s post-production regrind, showcasing our commitment to sustainable manufacturing.

Paweł Kapka

Initial Problem Description

This challenge addresses the issue of production waste at Kaplast. We generate regrind (recycled plastic materials from production scrap), which we aim to repurpose effectively. The project involves proposing a product idea that maximizes functionality, durability, and market appeal using recycled materials, aligning with Kaplast’s sustainability goals.

Context

This problem is relevant in the context of material efficiency and environmental responsibility in the plastic manufacturing industry. Potential products could include everyday items or industrial components that can use regrind without sacrificing quality. Possible markets include household goods, automotive parts, or office supplies, depending on product characteristics and demand.

Connection to cross-cutting areas

This project strongly emphasizes Circularity and General Sustainability by reducing waste through reusing production scraps. By repurposing regrind into valuable products, Kaplast not only minimizes raw material usage but also supports a circular economy approach. This initiative helps reduce environmental impacts associated with waste disposal and demonstrates the potential of sustainable practices in the plastics industry. Additionally, the project aligns with growing regulatory and market pressures for companies to adopt eco-friendly operations, enhancing Kaplast's competitive edge as a sustainable supplier.

Input

We can provide initial scenarios and insights into current trends in sustainable plastics and recycled material applications. Additionally, we’ll offer data on common types of regrind materials and potential limitations in properties, as well as examples of other industries successfully integrating recycled plastics.

Expectations

For this project, we expect teams to deliver a product concept that is both practical and sustainable, taking full advantage of recycled regrind materials without compromising on quality. The teams should analyze the potential applications, assess product durability, and explore ways to market this eco-friendly product effectively. We also expect a breakdown of the production process, costs, and environmental benefits. Beyond the design itself, we would like teams to consider consumer appeal and explore creative approaches to market the sustainable value of the product.

Desired Team Profile

For this project, we are looking for a multidisciplinary team with skills in materials engineering, sustainability, and industrial design. Knowledge of polymer science and sustainable product development would be valuable, as the team will need to understand the properties and limitations of regrind materials to create a functional product. Experience in market research or business development would also be beneficial, as the team will need to assess consumer interest and develop a market strategy that highlights the product’s sustainable qualities. Ideally, we seek individuals who are passionate about sustainability and have a strong interest in circular economy solutions within the manufacturing industry.

Additional Information

Kaplast operates in a competitive industry where sustainable innovation is a key differentiator. Companies within the sector are increasingly exploring circular economy practices, and integrating recycled materials into production lines is becoming an industry standard. Understanding this competitive landscape and the sustainability demands of B2B clients will be essential.

About Paweł Kapka

Kaplast – Modern Technology and Quality in the Production of Thermoplastic Polymer Components

Kaplast is a dynamic company based in Bydgoszcz, specializing in the production of thermoplastic polymer components. Our advanced technological base includes injection molding machines with clamping forces ranging from 25 to 800 tons, enabling us to take on a wide range of projects and production challenges. Our modern equipment and extensive machine park allow us to offer comprehensive services, including:

Custom Product Manufacturing – creating components tailored to individual customer needs.
Additional Services – packing, repackaging, final product assembly, pad printing, and screen printing to enhance product value.
Injection Mold Construction – we independently create molds for our clients, ensuring full control over quality and speed of order execution.
Measurement Services – our R&D lab enables precise quality and property testing of products.
Repair and Maintenance – our tooling and locksmithing department handles maintenance and minor repairs of molds and equipment, ensuring continuous production flow.
As we prepare to introduce new, innovative solutions, we would like to assign students a project under the Indusac program. We propose that they create three product concepts that could expand Kaplast's offerings, responding to current market needs, sustainability goals, and production possibilities.
