Project 3: Innovative and Useful Product

Desired outcome

Develop a unique and practical product that addresses specific user needs in daily life, leveraging Kaplast’s expertise in thermoplastic injection molding.

Paweł Kapka

Initial Problem Description

Kaplast is looking to diversify its offerings by introducing an innovative and practical product with strong market potential. This challenge encourages students to identify an unmet consumer need, design a solution, and create a product that is functional and visually appealing. The objective is to bring a new, desirable product to market using Kaplast’s manufacturing capabilities.

Context

The challenge stems from Kaplast’s ambition to enter new product categories with high demand and daily utility. The product could range from consumer goods to tools that improve quality of life, designed with practicality and ease of use in mind. This project should prioritize consumer appeal and address a real market need.

Connection to cross-cutting areas

This project connects to Industry 4.0 and Digitalisation by leveraging advanced design and manufacturing technologies, such as 3D modeling, rapid prototyping, and potentially smart features in product design. The integration of digital tools enhances efficiency, customization, and product functionality, aligning with the principles of Industry 4.0. Additionally, General Sustainability can be achieved if the product is designed for durability, repairability, or recyclability, reducing waste and encouraging longer product lifespans. By embracing innovative technology and sustainable design, this project enhances Kaplast’s ability to stay relevant in an increasingly digitized and environmentally conscious market.

Input

For Project 3, we can provide students with initial insights into current market trends, consumer needs, and areas with high demand for innovative solutions. Data on successful case studies of new product launches in related industries will also be available, helping teams understand factors that drive consumer interest. Additionally, we will offer technical information about Kaplast’s manufacturing capabilities, including materials commonly used, production limitations, and our facilities' adaptability for prototyping and scaling production. This will allow teams to realistically assess the feasibility of their product ideas within the scope of Kaplast’s resources. Furthermore, we will share information on emerging trends in Industry 4.0 and digitalization, especially in product customization, to help students consider innovative features or design processes that could set their product apart. Teams are encouraged to think about how these digital technologies can be incorporated into the product’s design or manufacturing, thus enhancing functionality and market appeal.

Expectations

In this project, we expect teams to go beyond merely conceptualizing an innovative product. The solution should involve a thorough market analysis, identifying an unmet consumer need and exploring how Kaplast can meet it through innovative design. Teams should consider the product’s functionality, durability, and production feasibility within Kaplast’s existing infrastructure. We also look for detailed documentation on prototyping, potential production costs, and strategies for scaling production. Additionally, a marketing plan emphasizing the product’s unique value proposition is essential. We anticipate teams will leverage digital design tools to deliver a concept that showcases both innovation and practicality, appealing to a wide consumer base.

Desired Team Profile

For the innovation-focused project, we are looking for a well-rounded team with skills in product design, marketing, materials science, and industrial engineering. We welcome creative thinkers with experience in user-centered design who can identify and address consumer needs effectively. Knowledge in digital prototyping, 3D modeling, and rapid prototyping technologies would be highly valuable, as the team will likely need to create digital or physical models. Additionally, experience in market analysis and consumer behavior research will be crucial for understanding target audiences and building a product with strong market potential. Ideally, the team would also include members with an interest in Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing, as the project may incorporate digitalization elements to enhance product appeal.

Additional Information

The consumer market is increasingly competitive, with a strong demand for practical, innovative products that offer convenience and sustainability. With the rise of digital manufacturing processes and Industry 4.0 technologies, Kaplast aims to leverage these trends to enter new markets and respond to evolving consumer needs.

About Paweł Kapka

Kaplast – Modern Technology and Quality in the Production of Thermoplastic Polymer Components

Kaplast is a dynamic company based in Bydgoszcz, specializing in the production of thermoplastic polymer components. Our advanced technological base includes injection molding machines with clamping forces ranging from 25 to 800 tons, enabling us to take on a wide range of projects and production challenges. Our modern equipment and extensive machine park allow us to offer comprehensive services, including:

Custom Product Manufacturing – creating components tailored to individual customer needs.
Additional Services – packing, repackaging, final product assembly, pad printing, and screen printing to enhance product value.
Injection Mold Construction – we independently create molds for our clients, ensuring full control over quality and speed of order execution.
Measurement Services – our R&D lab enables precise quality and property testing of products.
Repair and Maintenance – our tooling and locksmithing department handles maintenance and minor repairs of molds and equipment, ensuring continuous production flow.
As we prepare to introduce new, innovative solutions, we would like to assign students a project under the Indusac program. We propose that they create three product concepts that could expand Kaplast's offerings, responding to current market needs, sustainability goals, and production possibilities.
