Initial Problem Description

We more often receive requests for green events and increasing pressure to host events that are not only memorable but also environmentally sustainable. We are lacking structured methodologies or resources to achieve this balance. The challenge is to develop a service and methodology that allows restaurants to plan and execute sustainable events efficiently. This includes addressing resource optimization, waste reduction, and customer engagement in sustainability initiatives. Participants must provide practical guides, tools, and frameworks that empower restaurant owners to integrate sustainability into event planning, from sourcing materials to managing energy use and waste, while maintaining high service standards.

Context

In the growing trend of eco-consciousness, restaurants we are asked to offer sustainable options for private and corporate events. Customers and businesses increasingly prefer venues that reflect their values, including a commitment to sustainability. However, traditional event planning methods in the hospitality industry often lead to significant waste and inefficiencies. By creating a sustainable event planning service, restaurants can better meet customer demands while also contributing positively to the environment. This challenge exists at the intersection of hospitality, sustainability, and operational innovation, aiming to create a lasting impact on both the industry and its patrons.

Connection to cross-cutting areas

Sustainability: Introduce solutions like waste reduction practices, sustainable sourcing, and eco-friendly event decorations.
Circularity: Design systems that reuse resources, such as renting reusable items for events or collaborating with local recyclers.
Digitalization: Incorporate digital tools for event planning, guest management, and carbon footprint tracking to enhance efficiency and transparency.

Input

There is a growing trend toward zero-waste events, which focus on minimizing disposable items and using recyclable materials. Customers are also drawn to interactive sustainability efforts, such as composting initiatives or eco-themed decorations. Additionally, digital tools like QR codes for menus and online event scheduling apps are becoming integral to modern event planning.

Expectations

The team is expected to deliver a well-rounded solution, including a structured methodology, innovative service concepts, and easy-to-use guides for restaurant owners and staff. Solutions should focus on how to balance sustainability with cost-effectiveness, ensuring the new service is both environmentally and financially viable. These solutions should enhance the restaurant’s reputation and attract new clientele who value sustainability.

Desired Team Profile

The ideal team consists of individuals skilled in sustainability practices, event management, and the hospitality industry. Creative thinkers with expertise in digital tools and marketing strategies will be valuable. A mix of practical experience and theoretical knowledge in eco-friendly innovations and service design is crucial for success in this challenge.

Additional Information

The team will be provided to insights into our event planning practices, data on waste and resource consumption during events, and examples of successful sustainable initiatives. The challenge will also include guidelines on sustainability certifications and customer feedback data to ensure proposed solutions align with market expectations and environmental standards.
