Initial Problem Description

Despite continuous innovation, skincare formulations often exhibit inefficiencies due to formulation design limitations, delivery mechanisms, and gaps in absorption assessment. This project investigates ingredient interactions to optimize their combined effects, focusing on vitamins, micro- and macronutrients, peptides, hyaluronic acid, and botanical extracts. Analytical methodologies to measure multi-component absorption and penetration will be explored to ensure precise efficacy evaluations without direct absorption testing. The study will also include an in-depth analysis of market trends, identifying key competitors, and evaluating existing skincare solutions.

Context

Advancements in formulation science provide opportunities to enhance the effectiveness of bioactive compounds in skincare. However, many formulations still struggle with inadequate ingredient stability, limited skin penetration, and insufficient measurement techniques. This challenge will explore improved delivery mechanisms such as encapsulation technologies, emulsification techniques, and polymer-based carriers to optimize absorption and long-term stability. Furthermore, the project focuses on refining non-invasive analytical tools to assess formulation performance effectively. Additionally, a detailed market study will help identify strengths and weaknesses in current product offerings, ensuring the development of more competitive and innovative formulations.

Connection to cross-cutting areas

This challenge aligns with several interdisciplinary priorities:
• Industry 4.0 and Digitalization: The use of advanced analytical models and formulation simulations to predict multi-component interactions and improve product development.
• Circularity and Sustainability: Emphasizing eco-friendly formulation strategies, biodegradable ingredients, and responsible analytical approaches.
• Health and Well-being: Contributing to the development of advanced formulations targeting hydration, anti-aging, and barrier-repair functions.

Input

• A comprehensive database of patents and technical references to conduct thorough comparative analyses.
• Detailed reviews of encapsulation technologies and advanced delivery methods applicable to skincare formulations.
• Updated methodologies for evaluating ingredient absorption, including spectroscopy, skin models, and enhanced non-invasive assessment techniques.

Expectations

We expect:
• Theoretically design and refine multi-component formulations with improved delivery strategies, explore and evaluate enhanced analytical techniques to measure ingredient penetration and absorption, and develop a strategic framework for optimizing skincare formulation assessment without direct human or animal testing.
• Conduct market evaluation and competitive analysis by thoroughly reviewing existing skincare products to assess their composition, effectiveness, pricing, and consumer reception. Identify major market players and their strengths/weaknesses to define innovation gaps.
• Perform patent investigation through a comprehensive analysis of patents related to active ingredients, delivery mechanisms, and formulation techniques to guide the development of novel, non-infringing skincare solutions.

Desired Team Profile

Team member's experience:
• Dermatology, Pharmacology, and Biochemistry: Investigating ingredient interactions and biological effects on skin.
• Chemical and Cosmetic Engineers: Developing and improving formulation structures for enhanced stability and performance.
• Analytical Chemists: Refining non-invasive measurement techniques to assess multi-component absorption and efficacy.
• Market Analysts: Research existing skincare products, evaluate competition, and analyze consumer preferences.
• Patent Researchers: Investigating existing intellectual property to guide formulation innovation and avoid infringement.

Additional Information
