Desired outcome

There is a growing need for an alternative filter bed material for swimming pool water filtration—one that goes beyond traditional options such as sand, AFM (Activated Filter Media), glass, diatomaceous earth, and OC-1. Currently available solutions often require significant amounts of water for backwashing, which makes them inefficient and environmentally unsustainable. The goal is to develop a completely new type of filter bed, ideally made from waste-derived or recyclable materials, that ensures effective filtration while drastically reducing water consumption.

Initial Problem Description

Conventional filter beds demand large volumes of water for cleaning and backwashing, which contributes to high operating costs and water wastage. Although materials like sand, AFM, glass media, and OC-1 are widely used, they do not fully satisfy the increasing requirements for sustainable and efficient swimming pool water filtration. Therefore, there is a need to develop an entirely new filter medium—potentially based on waste materials—that will reduce water consumption during maintenance without compromising filtration efficiency. This innovation should also be scalable and adaptable to various types of swimming pools and other water treatment systems.

Context

The new filter bed will primarily serve in swimming pool water treatment systems. However, the developed technology should be flexible enough to be applied across different sectors where water filtration is critical. As water scarcity and environmental regulations become more pressing, there is an urgent need for filtration systems that are both efficient and sustainable. The solution should be developed using modern methodologies, such as design thinking, to ensure that it is user-centered, innovative, and feasible for commercial implementation.

Connection to cross-cutting areas

This challenge directly aligns with the principles of a circular economy. The proposed filter bed could be produced from recycled or waste-derived materials, which supports resource efficiency and waste reduction. Additionally, lowering the water consumption required for filter maintenance contributes to sustainable water management. As such, this innovation fits perfectly within broader environmental goals and the philosophy of sustainable development and closed-loop systems promoted by Industry 4.0.

Input

There are many methods of water disinfection. from physical methods such as filtration on various
filter beds and membrane filtration to chemical methods such as sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen
peroxide, active oxygen and other methods such as silver or copper ions. Looking for another simple
chemical disinfection method that can be easily recorded.

Expectations

We expect the industry and the field of disinfection other than chlorine to develop. I think it will be a
gigantic revolution and something completely new. It will not be an easy way while it is necessary to
act from such a point and aim to encircle innovative solutions. I would like to keep this method
simple and cheap. I want it to be accessible to all users.

Desired Team Profile

I would like it to be a multidisciplinary team. It would be worthwhile for it to include chemists,
microbiologists, technologists and specialists in zero waste technology. It would also be worthwhile
for there to be people from a completely different industry to look at the topic from a completely
different angle - perhaps IT or art

Additional Information

There are many methods of water disinfection. from physical methods such as on various filter beds
and membrane filtration to chemical methods such as sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide,
active oxygen and other methods such as silver or copper ions. Looking for another simple chemical
disinfection method that can be easily recorded. The state of the art for these solutions was not
made
